[Cross-Cultural Lessons] That Made Me a Better Leader
Written by Jim Vickers

My friend Malau:

✅ Speaks five languages

✅ Is an incredible reader and musician

✅ Navigates the jungle without GPS

✅ Climbs 20-foot palm trees in seconds

✅ Walks barefoot on razor-sharp coral

✅ Sees perfectly in pitch darkness

He learned all of this with no formal education. No degrees. No training programs…

Meeting him changed how I lead forever.

I met Malau on a mission trip supporting pastors-in-training who were preparing to serve extremely remote villages.

👉 Our faith opened the door.

But it was mutual respect—and a willingness to learn from each other—that built lasting trust.

His gifted leadership in that challenging environment reminded me…

The goal isn’t for everyone to be the same. It’s to respect the unique strengths in our differences.

As leaders, we guide people with vastly different worldviews.

When I returned from Vanuatu, I changed my approach.

I met one-on-one with my team members at every level—listening and uncovering their unique “superpowers”.

Malau and I saw the world very differently—yet we built a friendship that will last for eternity.
